Bridge on the open ocean
There is no better place to play bridge than at sea. No distractions, no commitments — just sea days, good cards, and fellow players who love the game as much as you do.
Search Bridge Cruises →The golden rule — sea days
Every cruise we feature has a minimum of five sea days. That’s our threshold because anything less doesn’t give you the time to settle into a proper bridge routine, find your regular partners, and really enjoy the game. The best bridge cruises — transatlantics, world voyage segments — have ten, fifteen, even thirty sea days. That’s what we look for.
Choosing the right bridge cruise
Not every cruise is equal for bridge players. Here’s what to consider when planning your voyage.
Sea days — as many as possible
Count the actual sea days, not just the voyage length. A 14-night cruise calling at a port every day is far less valuable for bridge than a 10-night cruise with 8 sea days.
A hosted bridge programme
The best ships employ a dedicated bridge host or director who runs daily sessions and tournaments. Fred Olsen, Cunard and P&O all have strong bridge reputations. Always check before sailing.
A proper card room
Check the ship has a dedicated card room with enough tables. Smaller ships often punch above their weight here — fewer passengers means a tighter, more committed bridge community.
The right fellow passengers
Longer voyages and British-focused lines attract more serious bridge players. A transatlantic on QM2 will have a very different bridge crowd to a 7-night Med cruise.
Partner arrangements
Travelling solo or without a bridge partner? Some hosted programmes include partner matching. Register your group interest with Bridge at Sea and we’ll connect you with others on the same sailing.
Timing — spring and autumn
Spring and autumn repositioning cruises often have the best sea day ratios. They attract experienced travellers and tend to have the strongest on-board bridge communities.
The best voyage types for bridge
Some routes are simply better for bridge than others. Here’s our guide to the best options.
Transatlantic Crossings
Six to eight consecutive sea days each way, a dedicated community of players, and enough time for a proper multi-day tournament. The QM2 is the most famous but many lines offer Atlantic crossings. Our Cruise Finder features the best.
World Voyages & Segments
Weeks at sea, a tight-knit community, and enough time to try every scoring format. Even booking a segment of a world cruise gives you a concentrated bridge holiday unlike anything else.
Canary Islands & Atlantic
From UK ports, Canary Islands cruises offer an excellent sea day ratio — typically 5–8 sea days each way. Warm weather, relaxed pace, and a predominantly British passenger mix ideal for bridge.
Baltic & Scandinavia
Stunning scenery but many Baltic itineraries have a port call every day. Look for Fred Olsen hosted programmes on these routes — they’re specifically designed with bridge in mind.

Fred Olsen Cruise Lines Hosted Bridge
Smaller ships, predominantly British passengers, and the strongest hosted bridge reputation of any UK cruise line. Daily sessions, seminars and partner matching included on Balmoral. Our top recommendation for dedicated bridge players.
Cunard
Home of the QM2 transatlantic crossing — the most famous bridge voyage in the world. White Star Service, a dedicated card room, and a long tradition of serious bridge on board. The crossing is a rite of passage for any bridge player.
P&O Cruises
Britain’s most popular cruise line with a strong bridge tradition. Good card room facilities on most ships and regular bridge activity on longer voyages from Southampton. Ideal if you want a familiar, relaxed British atmosphere.
Ambassador Cruise Line No Fly
Britain’s newest cruise line sailing from Tilbury, Liverpool and other UK ports — no flying required. Adult-focused with a relaxed British atmosphere. Ambition carries equipment for seven bridge tables and Ambience has a well-appointed card room.
Celebrity Cruises
Modern premium ships with excellent facilities and strong card room cultures. Celebrity Apex sails from Southampton and is particularly good for transatlantic repositioning voyages with high sea day counts.
Princess Cruises
Sky Princess sails from Southampton with excellent facilities. Strong card room culture and a loyal following among serious bridge players. Good for longer voyages with high sea day counts.
Norwegian Cruise Line
Freestyle Cruising with flexible dining and no fixed schedules — ideal for bridge players who want to organise their own sessions. Norwegian sails from Southampton to Iceland, the Arctic and beyond.
Royal Caribbean
Liberty of the Seas sails from Southampton in summer 2026 and repositions westbound to Galveston in October — 15 nights with 10 sea days. Excellent value for a transatlantic bridge voyage.
Carnival Cruise Line
Best value transatlantic option — Carnival Legend repositions from Miami to Dover in May 2026 with 9 Atlantic sea days. Excellent for bridge players looking for an affordable crossing.
