3-Table Movements

🃏 3-Table Movements — 5 or 6 Pairs

Table Movement Cards for 3-table duplicate bridge sessions. Works with exactly 6 pairs, or 5 pairs with one sit-out rotation.

Found 6 pairs (12 players) on your cruise? Excellent — three tables is where duplicate bridge really starts to shine. With a 3-table Howell movement every pair plays every other pair, and you get a proper ranked result at the end. This is one of the most common setups for informal cruise bridge groups.

Print one movement card per table — three cards in total. If you can, laminate them or print on card stock so they survive the session. The ship’s photo centre or business centre can often print on heavier paper if you ask.

10 Boards — Short Session (~1.5 hours)

5 rounds of 2 boards • 6 pairs, full Howell movement

A brisk 10-board session is perfect when you have limited time — perhaps fitting in a game before the evening show or a port excursion. You still get a full competitive result with every pair having faced every other pair once.

15 Boards — Standard Session (~2 hours)

5 rounds of 3 boards • 6 pairs, full Howell movement

The standard 3-table session — long enough to produce meaningful results with some real bridge played, while still finishing in time for dinner. This is the one to print if you’re not sure how much time you’ll have.

💡 Tip: This is the recommended starting point for most cruise bridge groups. Print this one first.

25 Boards — Full Session (~3 hours)

5 rounds of 5 boards • 6 pairs, full Howell movement

For a long sea day when everyone is happy to play seriously, this full 25-board session gives you a club-standard afternoon of duplicate bridge. Plan for a long session, settle into the card room, and enjoy!

Only 5 pairs? No problem — the 3.5-table sit-out movement
If you can only find 5 pairs, you can still run a proper 3-table session. One pair sits out each round on a rotating basis, so everyone gets a rest and everyone competes fairly. It takes a little longer to explain to newcomers but works perfectly well.

15 Boards — 5 Pairs with Sit-Out (~2 hours)

5 rounds • One pair sits out each round • Fair rotation

Five pairs, three tables — this movement rotates the sit-out fairly so each pair misses the same number of rounds. Results are calculated only on the boards each pair actually played.

25 Boards — 5 Pairs with Sit-Out (~3 hours)

5 rounds • One pair sits out each round • Full session

The full-length version for five pairs with plenty of time. Each pair plays 20 boards across the session, enough for a rich competitive result.
